When I write, I generally tend towards magic realism. It’s kinda my thing. I like subtle magic. I like secrets lingering below the surface, I like when the modern mixes with magic.
But I am definitely of the mind that as a writer, one should always be trying new things. Heck, as a human one should be trying new things. What’s life if not a rich tapestry of experiences, a cornucopia overflowing with possibility? Sound a bit cheesy? Maybe, but I’m just practicing for my next new thing.
I’m going to try writing high fantasy.
I grew up loving Willow and The Princess Bride, Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. I watched Sheera and pretended to be her with a plastic sword and shield in my driveway. I’ve LARPed and played D&D and loved both, but never have I actually attempted to write anything high fantasy.
Maybe it’s just that we’ve been watching Game of Thrones for the past couple of weeks, getting ourselves refreshed so we can move onto the new season, but I feel the burgeoning tingle of a new idea, a new genre.
It’s exciting to do something you’ve never done before, to step outside of your regular routine and into something novel.
I’m not sure if it’s in me, but I do know that sometimes I get chills from the way Tolkien turns a phrase. So I figure, even if it’s not in my blood and bones, it’s worth it to try something new.
What new thing are you trying today?
